Patterns of Intuition

Musical Creativity in the Light of Algorithmic Composition, Nierhaus G. (ed.)

Due on January 14, 2015 by Springer, New York

After a three year research project at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics of the University of Music and Drama at Graz, the publication of the research results is due on January 14, 2015 as Springer, NY, announced today.

The research project investigated the creative act of composing by means of algorithmic composition. Central to the investigation are the compositional strategies of 12 composers, which were documented through a dialogic and cyclic process of modelling and evaluating musical materials. The aesthetic premises and compositional approaches configure a rich spectrum of diverse positions, which is reflected also in the kinds of approaches and methods used.

The book includes the chapter Dimitri Papageorgiou/Interlocking and Scaling, which is my composition project within  the frame of Patterns of Intuition.

The first part of the book entails another very interesting 11 composition projects by Elisabeth Harnik, Clemens Nachtmann, Eva Reiter, Clemens Gadenstätter, Katharina Klement, Orestis Toudektsis, Alexander Stankovski, Matthias Sköld, Djuro Zivkovic, Bart Vanhecke, and Peter Lackner.

The second part features contributions by Sandeep Bagwhati, William Brooks, David Cope, Darla Crispin, Nicolas Donin, and Guerino Mazzola. These authors variously consider the project from different perspectives, offer independent approaches, or provide more general reflections from their respective research fields.

Many thanks go to our editor and project leader, dr. Gerhard Nierhaus, and his team, dr. Hanns Holger Rutz and Daniel Mayer, for their tireless effort during this three year period.

Lecture IEM (Graz): Patterns of Intuition

Gerhard Nierhaus, Hanns Holger Rutz and Daniel Mayer: “Patterns of Intuition,” Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) at Graz (“Studio-in-Residence” of the Darmstadt Summer Course 2014)

During the past three years, 2012-14, I was among the guest composers of the art-research project Patterns of Intuition (POINT), which was hosted by the Institute of Electronic Music (dr. Gerhard Nierhaus – project leader) at the University of Music and Performing Arts at Graz, Austria, and was funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

The project was investigating the creative process of composing by means of Algorithmic Composition in collaboration with 14 European composers and 9 guest artist/researchers.

Composers (in alphabetical order):

Tamara Friebel, Clemens Gadenstätter, Elisabeth Harnik, Sonja Huber, Katherina Klement, Peter Lackner, Clemens Nachtmann, Dimitri Papageorgiou, Eva Reiter, Mattias Sköld, Alexander Stankowski, Orestis Toufektsis, Bart Vanhecke, and Djuro Zivkovic.

Guest artist/researchers (in alphabetical order):

Sandeep Bhagwati, William Brooks, David Cope, Darla Crispin, Nicolas Donin, Thomas Eder, Klemens Fellner, Harald Fripertinger, and Guerino Mazzola.

The commissioned works for the project have been presented on July 2nd in a double concert performed by the string players of the ensemble Klangforum Wien and Janna Polyzoides.

The research findings, including project reports for the work with each composer and research chapters by the guest artists/researchers will be published later this year by Springer, NY.

Tomorrow, the project leader, dr. Gerhard Nierhaus, and his associates, dr. Hanns Holger Rutz and dr. Daniel Mayer, present the project in a lecture at the 47th International Summer Course for New Music at Darmstadt.

Tomorrow, July 2nd, the string quartet of the ensemble Klangforum Wien premiers my work Quasi (ébauche) within the frame of two concluding concerts of the research project Patterns of Intuition.

Patterns of Intuition II

String quartett of the ensemble Klangforum Wien: Annette Bik – violin, Sophie Schafleitner – violin, Dimitrios Polisoidis – viola, Andreas Lindenbaum – cello.

Works by Alexander Stankovski, Djuro Zivkovic, Eva Reiter, and Dimitri Papageorgiou.

Organized by the Gesellschaft der Freunde der KUG Wednesday,
02-07-2014, 19:45
MUMUTH, György-Ligeti-Saal, Lichtenfelsgasse 14, 8010 Graz
Info: Tel: +43 316/389-1330 ; abo(at)kug.ac.at

The concerts Pattern of Intuition I (17:45) and II (Mumuth subscription concert, 19:45) present works for solo piano and string quartet that have been composed during the three year long research project POINT. The research project has been conducted at the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustic of the University of Music and Drama at Graz in cooperation with an international team of composers and scientists from various disciplines.

The research project POINT, which has been financed by the Austrian Research Fund (FWF) opens a new approach to musical analysis, in that the creative act of composition is investigated with computer-based methods during the creation of new works.

In between the two concerts, project leader dr. Gerhard Nierhaus and his staff will give an introductory speech about the project.
